What is an "Episcopal Church?"

We are a protestant church that is part of the worldwide Anglican Communion (which began in England around 1550). The word "Episcopal" means a church with bishops.

Our Bishop, Wendell N. Gibbs, Jr. is the pastor of our diocese, and presides at our cathedral in downtown Detroit. We celebrate the Lord's Supper every Sunday, and invite all people to eat this sacred meal with us. Jesus comes to us in bread and wine to give us his love, and to make us stronger to do his work.

Episcopalians are known for exploration of their faith, rather than setting down doctrines for all to believe, and rules to follow. St. Gabriel's continues in that tradition of inquiry, wonder, and freedom. We look for God's Word and will in the bible, but also in the Church's tradition and in our own hearts and minds, as we navigate together the questions and miracles of daily life.
